How to Create a Menu Part 6

E-mail

Part 6 of this tutorial helps you understand the Joomla 1.5 Menu System and how you can create a Menu linked to a Section, Category and Article.

Create a Menu Linked to a Section and Category

Next step is to create a Menu linked to the Section and Category we created. Select
Menus  Filmmaking (you may have chosen a different name for your Menu Group Title)

which will take you to the Menu Item page. As I said earlier I want my Intro to appear not the whole article. This is in a Blog style so that the user can choose what intro of an article interests them and go to the full article. So I will explain how to create a Blog style Category page for all my articles linked to that Category.

On the Menu Items page we have a long list of choices. Select Article

Then the list will expand choose Category Blog Layout

This will take us to the Category Blog Layout page.

I have entered the following details for my menu
Title: Animation
Alias: animation

On the right had side of the Category Blog Layout page I chose the
Category: Filmmaking/Animation (Section = Filmmaking/ Category = Animation)

Now there are a couple things to consider.

If you wrote a description or inserted a {loadpostion googlead} in the Category text editor and you want it to show. Make sure the Description Show button is selected

Also this is an area that a lot of newbies make a mistake and dash on the internet searching and asking for a solution. I know this because it was exactly what I did when I first started using Joomla. Here is the answer.

In Parameters (Basic) Leading and #Intro are basically the same. It is saying you want (1+4 =) 5 articles to appear on your Category page.

This is the mistake we make:

Columns
Columns: 2 this means after the leading article all other articles must be split into 2 columns. I prefer to have 1 column for all my articles on the Category page. So I change the value so to
Columns: 1

Links
The default setting is
#Links: 4

I don’t want my articles to appear as links. That’s why I choose a Category Blog Layout. So I change it to
#Links: 0

So my settings are
Category: Filmmaking/Animation
#Leading: 1
#Intro: 4
Columns: 1
 #Links: 0

Now click the Save button on the top right hand side of the Category Blog Layout page. This will save your settings and close the page.

To learn the next step to Activating your Menu follow this link to the tutorial explaining how to do this.
