Part 4 of this tutorial helps you understand the Joomla 1.5 Menu System and how you can create a Menu linked to a Section, Category and Article.
Write an Article and Link it to a Section and Category
Now we need to write an article. Oddly enough I have one handy which is a word document. A little warning when you copy and paste from a word document, it may create some quirks (formatting and hidden programming instructions) To resolve the possibility of any quirks, paste the article in note pad if you’re using a PC. This will get rid of any potential quirks.
Now that your article is ready to put on your website, on the top left hand of the administration page select
Content --> Article Manager
This will take you to the Article Manager page.
In the Article Manager page on the right hand side, you will notice some dropdown lists. These are very useful and you will use them with almost everything you do to administer your Joomla website.
The dropdown list is a search filter.
Select Section: will show you a list of the Sections on the Joomla website.
Select Category: will show you a list of the Categories
Just a note if you selected a Section but want to select a Category or visa versa make sure you click Select Section otherwise when you select Category, it will list all Categories in the Section you had chosen.
So I have selected only the Category Animation and there is no article in the Category for Animation. So from the top right hand corner click the New button to create a new Article
This will take us to a new Article Editor page. Lots of knobs and dials but don’t let this put you off.
Okay first we need to give a title for the page.
Title: If You Can Type You Can Make Movies
Alias: If-you-can-type-you-can-make-movies (I use – between words for the SEO)
Section: Filmmaking
We needed to create the Section and Category before creating the article. If we created the article first we would have had to save it in a non-related Section/Categor.
We also select the Category
Category: Animation (or whatever Category you wish to link the article to.)
Published
Make sure Published radio button is selected for yes so we can see the article on our website. If the No radio button is selected then your article won’t appear on your website.
Front Page
By default this is set to No. If you set it to Yes it will appear in the Section/Category you choose and also on the Front Page.
Now we look at the article itself. I have copied my word document article and pasted it in notepad on my PC, to get rid of any quirks. I then copied the text from the notepad and pasted it into the article text box.
I like to provide an introduction to an article with a read more message. That way the whole article isn’t displayed in the Category or Front Page and the user can read the full article on the article page. So after the introduction text, I go down the bottom of the page and click the ReadMore button.
This will insert a line break that tells the Joomla System that it can only show the Intro text in the Category page and if you chose in the Front Page.
Copy and paste the rest of your article after the Read More line break.
Now click the Save button which will save the article and take you out of the Article Editor page.
