Installing Joomla 1.5 Part 1

E-mail

This tutorial is Part 1 of how to install Joomla on a website server. It is very simple to understand and has pictures to help you along the way.

Installing Joomla Part 1

So you have decided you want to build your website using Joomla CMS (Content Management System) and you are probably asking yourself where do I start?

First of all you need to find an ISP(Internet Service Provider) who allows Joomla to be hosted on their service. If you already have a website hosted by an ISP and want to use Joomla to manage your website call your ISP and see if it is possible to have joomla installed for you.

I had my static website hosted by www.ans.com.au for years. After playing around with a Linux server at home learning PHP, using a database called MySQL, I stumbled on Joomla while researching the internet. Thank god for Google. So I installed Joomla on my Linux server at home and played around with it learning it's functions. After a while I realised the potential of this CMS and contacted my ISP who was only too happy to install it for me. Now when I say install it, this means they will setup a MySQL database, Install the Joomla installation package and provide access to cpanel to manage my website files, FTP uploads etc. I also asked that my old website remain active while I install and organize my new Joomla website and its articles.

When you have got your Joomla installation package and MySQL organised by your ISP, you need to get some important details from your ISP;

1. The link to your Joomla website
2. Host name - which is normally 'localhost'
3. Username - for the website and MySQL
4. Password - Admin access to your website
5. Database Name - so Joomla can access your database

Once you have these details you can begin your installation by getting on the internet and connecting to your Joomla website using the link your ISP gave your.

Here is a picture of the first page that will greet you

Choose Language

The first page lets you decide what language you want your website to be in. I chose english since I speak english and it is the international language.

Now click 'Next' to go to the next page

Pre-Installation Check

This page is to check if there are any problems with Joomla. If there are any problems, you will see them highlighted in Red.

My installation had errors for;

Errors
configuration.php writable No - Don't worry about this because I did the installation on my home server so I could develop this tutorial for you. Not just that you can fix the configuration.php file later.

Display Error: On - Once again don't worry about this.

If everthing else is green, you are green to go.

Your ISP will have setup MySQL and PHP so that your installation should be problem free.
